Matthew Broderick – Movie Star of War Games

war movies

If you’re reading this page, it’s probably because you’re an avid fan of War Games and you want to know about the man who (thankfully) failed to start a nuclear war but (again, thankfully) succeeded in popularising the real-time-strategy genre of computer gaming. Matthew Broderick, the grandfather of war games!

War Games was only Matthew Broderick’s second movie, but it helped make him famous as the movie was a huge hit in the ‘80s. War Games saw Broderick play David Lightman, a hacker who comes into contact with a United States Military Computer. Nuclear war was averted, but the movie highlighted plenty of opportunities in war game simulation and real-time-strategy.

Of course, it wasn’t just the movie that helped popularise the genre. The movie had a video game as well, and the 1984 game was one of the first of its kind, paving the way for many games afterwards. Yet it wouldn’t be anything without the film that inspired it all.

Needless to say, War Games was a huge success, especially for Matthew Broderick. He later went on to star in other movies, notably Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in 1986. This was another huge success and was a coming of age film with a lot of laughs. Broderick played the titular Ferris Bueller on a day off away from school.
